Castro Ventosa El Castro de Valtuille Barrica 2018
Ventosa is the family estate of wonderfully talented winemaker, Raul Perez. El Castro de Valtuille is produced mostly from old-vine Mencia but also incorporates other varieties such as Garnacha Tintorera and Trousseau, with a very small portion of white grapes, too. It was fermented with 50% full clusters in 5,000-litre oak vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by maturation in 225 and 500-litre French oak barrels for 12 months.
From the exceptional 2018 vintage, this is a vibrant yet elegant release with delicious perfume of black and red fruits, spices, sous bois and a distinctive mineralité. Medium-bodied with ample chalky tannins, this is a characterful wine that rides a superb line between delightful fresh fruit flavour and deep savoury complexity.
